Greetings and welcome once again to the Signature Word Podcast. This is for the week of Monday, June 1st, 2026. Today is part three of our series entitled David and Goliath, and our text for this episode will be taken from 1 Samuel chapter 17 and verses 36 and 37, where it says, Your servant has killed both lion and bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God. Moreover, David said, The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the bear, he will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine. While Saul had doubts about David facing Goliath, David here reminded Saul that this was not his first rodeo, that God had in fact enabled him to slay both a lion and a bear when they attacked his sheep, and that Goliath would be no different. In last week's episode we discussed the first two of three attributes that David possessed that were instrumental in him facing and defeating Goliath. They were courage and memory. Today we focus on the third attribute and that is faith. To understand the kind of faith David demonstrated, it helps to look at another biblical figure whose faith was tested under extreme pressure. Job. The account from chapter one of the book of Job goes that one day the devil paid God a visit. The topic of discussion Job's faith. The devil charged that Job was faithful only because he had been blessed with so much in life. The devil proposed that should God allow any number of these things to be taken away from Job, he would no longer be the faithful man God held him up to be. So this arrangement began when God allowed things to be taken away from Job's life. Over the course of these trials, Job lost everything he had worked so hard to achieve, his livestock, his family, his friends, and finally his health. Even when his wife told him he should curse God, Job didn't. He remained faithful. Some of you who are listening to this podcast are perhaps relaxing at home or perhaps on your way to work or some other destination. Your mind is not registering any thoughts of not arriving safely, even though there are no guarantees. What is heartwired in our being is a sense of faith. This is a faith that for most of us trumps feelings of anxiety, fear and worry. Otherwise, we would not leave our homes. Faith then is just as important as the air we breathe. While oxygen in the air nourishes the body, faith nourishes the heart, the soul, and the spirit. It is part of every muscle and every strand of thought. It is the fundamental foundation of our existence. Biblical faith is therefore rooted in our conscience reliance on the character and promises of God. The army of Israel thought Goliath was an invincible warrior that could not be defeated, and Goliath thought the same of himself. That is until faith in the person of a small lad named David stepped into the conflict. When faith enters the conflict, everything changes. Faith exposes the lie of invincibility. It alters the outcome before the fight begins. Faith is not confidence in ourselves, it is complete trust in the character, power, and faithfulness of God. This kind of faith leads us beyond knowledge about God into a living personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus Christ. God desires that we walk with Him daily, trusting Him fully, especially when the odds seem stacked against us. The Philistine army placed their faith in Goliath, and Goliath placed his faith in himself. Both were defeated. David, however, placed his faith in God, and that made all the difference. When you face your own giants, the question is not whether the giant is real because it is. The question is who or what are you trusting? Amen. On our next episode I will share some closing thoughts as we bring this series to a conclusion. And now our weekly signature thought. If you are trying to find fulfillment only through riches, wealth may be the only reward you will ever get, and it does not last. May God bless you.
